Preparing for Camera and Conversation

You do not need to be a professional presenter

Being on camera makes most people a little nervous, and that is normal. You do not need to arrive as a polished host. You just need to know your topic and be willing to talk about it. The goal is for your real expertise and personality to come through, not for you to perform.

Prepare the conversation, not a script

Word-for-word scripts tend to sound stiff on camera. Prepare talking points instead: the few things you want to cover, a rough order, and a strong opening and closing. Knowing where the conversation is headed frees you to sound natural in the moment.

If you are hosting a guest, share the topics ahead of time so they can prepare too. A guest who knows the shape of the conversation makes for a better conversation.

Get comfortable on camera

A few simple habits make a noticeable difference on screen.

• Talk to the person, not the lens. A conversation reads better than a presentation.
• Slow down slightly; a little more pace and energy than feels natural usually lands right.
• It is fine to restart a sentence. A clean second take is easy to keep.
• Have water nearby and take a breath between topics.

Small logistics that help

Wear solid colors you feel good in, and avoid tight patterns, which can shimmer on camera. If your show uses the green screen, skip green clothing, which can turn transparent on camera. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so you can settle in before recording, and bring any notes or prepared media you want to reference.
